I like tying these quill
spinner patterns with a couple turns of hackle around the thorax. It not
only makes them more visible, but also more buoyant. It’s very hard
to find good hen hackle for winging purposes. With today’s emphasis
on the stiff-loaded hackle with no webbing, fly tying suppliers are overlooking
the quality of webbing in the pullet feather. That’s why good webbed
hen hackle is like gold to me. Opportunity awaits for an entrepreneurial
fly tyer with a taste of pullet in his or her mouth.
